His work has increased in popularity worldwide, particularly his paintings of Scotland including those of native birchwoods, Caledonian pine forests, heather covered moorland and snowcapped mountains with the lively waters and bridges of Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire.
Equally popular are his oil paintings and watercolour paintings of historic castles, e.g Edinburgh Castle and Eilean Donan Castle, his coastal towns, e.g Portsoy, harbours and seascapes, e.g Skye, and city street scenes e.g Aberdeen. Mary Butterworth Mary has grown up surrounded by nature, observing and capturing her surroundings instinctively. From an artistic family, where painting and drawing were actively encouraged, her natural ability and passion for art were fostered. With no formal training in art she has been the student of her father since she left University. As a teacher he emphasised the importance and discipline of plein air painting and capturing the emotional impact of a scene rather than the pure realism of the scene. | |
Painting mostly in acrylic, her subjects are natural spaces for solace and reflection both within urban and countryside settings where the musicality of light can be observed within a brief pause.
In her work she attempts to capture the hypnotic qualities of light, pattern, and form emphasising elements which tie an observer emotionally to a place, making fleeting moments linger for the viewer.
She has exhibited and sold her paintings successfully since 1997, and has had a continuous display at The Butterworth Gallery since the end of 2003. She has painted portraits by commission and her paintings are held in private collections across the U.K, Spain and New Zealand.
